Oakwood is unlike anywhere else in the Miami Valley. Most of the homes we work on were built between 1915 and 1935 — brick and stone Tudors, English Colonials, four-square Foursquares, and the occasional Spanish Revival on Forest Avenue. These homes were built with butler’s pantries, formal dining rooms, and small functional kitchens designed for staff, which means almost every Oakwood kitchen project we touch involves either restoring the original layout properly or carefully opening it up without losing the home’s character. We build cabinetry in painted maple or quarter-sawn white oak with inset doors and period-appropriate hardware — knob-and-pull, not soft-close European hinges that look wrong on a 1920s home. Plaster walls, knob-and-tube wiring still in some homes, original hardwood subfloors that aren’t level — we’ve worked on it all, and we plan for it before the quote is signed, not after. Roughly half our Oakwood projects are full kitchens with quartz or honed soapstone counters, custom-built range hoods clad in metal, and tile backsplashes that read period from a distance. The other half are sympathetic refreshes — same footprint, new cabinetry that matches what was there. Most projects run 6-10 weeks given the surprises 100-year-old homes deliver. Oakwood is one of Ohio’s best-preserved early-20th-century communities, and that changes how you remodel a kitchen here. The housing is strong pre-1940 stock — Tudors, Colonial Revivals, and Cape Cods — concentrated around the Schantz Park Historic District and the historic boulevards along Far Hills, Triangle, Shafor, and Forrer avenues.
Working in a Schantz Park-era home means planning around plaster, original wiring, and framing that predates modern standards. Our up-front assessment catches those realities before the quote, so a period home gets a modern kitchen without losing what makes it an Oakwood house.

Quartz is the dominant choice for Oakwood kitchen remodels, though period-appropriate marble or natural stone is also common in historic homes. Most Oakwood clients land on a 2cm or 3cm slab in a warm white-with-grey-veining or a soft cream.
The two strongest looks in Oakwood kitchens are painted shaker (period-appropriate for Tudor and Colonial Revival homes) and rift-cut white oak (warmer, more architectural). Lead times: 8-12 weeks for custom paint, 10-14 weeks for rift-cut.
Oakwood's pre-1940 homes often have smaller original kitchens — island additions need careful sizing. Minimum aisle clearance is 42 inches. Common Oakwood island sizes when room permits: 4'×6', 4'×7'.
Many Oakwood historic homes had original butler's pantries that we restore or rebuild. Modern walk-in pantries often go where a 1920s breakfast nook or rear hallway used to be.
Open-concept conversions in Oakwood historic homes require careful preservation choices — we typically use cased openings or partial walls rather than full removals to honor the period. Structural engineer review is mandatory in pre-1940 homes.
A working kitchen needs three layers: ambient, task (undercabinet LED), and accent. Oakwood's historic homes often have lower ceilings (8' typical), so pendant scale and recessed-can placement need careful planning. All on dimmers.
